Journey Into Mystery #92:The Day Loki Stole Thor’s Magic Hammer

This issue of Journey Into Mystery is an important one, as it marks the first issue that Thor travels to Asgard himself. He has sent his hammer the distance with Loki before, but this time he is brought there to find what was taken from him.

but does the simple fact that this is his first trip home make it a worth wild story? does the evil plot of Loki pay off, and what about the feeling of timing in this issue? All these will be discussed in my comic book review of Journey Into Mystery #92.

Story

Synopsis

Today I will prove a worthy synopsis to the Thor story in just one paragraph: In this issue, Loki Devises an evil way to both get free from his binds in Asgard by finding a creative way to steal and use Thor’s hammer. Then he draws Thor to Asgard to finish him off on his home turf.

Review

I have just one key issue with the story in this issue, I feel the authors took too long to get to the point. In a comic book story, in particularly one that is only thirteen pages long, they wasted too many pages on Thor’s “other” activities.

The reason I feel that this was done, was to show the passage of time, that while Loki is bound, Thor carries on. But I find this to be unneeded, a simple “Few weeks later” would have done.

The first of the two sub stories was even more pointless and even annoying as it’s a bad rip off of an earlier Thor Story: Journey Into Mystery #89.

after we get done with the wasted and pointless Thug story, the issue is overall a good one; showing just how sneaky Loki can be.

Art

I do feel that Joe Sinnott did a good job with this issue art. I feel he had good uses of light as well as shadows in this work, as well as in showing us the facial details of Loki.

Just look at the included panel, I feel it demonstrates both the use of shadows and details as well as the Facial expression.

I feel that there was quality put throughout this issue from panel to panel, the kind of quality that I have come to mostly expect only on the opening pages of the story.

Originality & Continuity

Continuity I feel is held up quite well in this story, and in fact it is much a believable next step for the ongoing Thor Vs. Loki Drama. It builds upon what was already established with Loki being unable to leave Asgard.

Magnetism and many different kinds of it is something we have seen used a lot lately, and it is getting kind of old.  But beyond the “hows” the story is an interesting one, and an original one in using your nemesis and the hero’s own weapon as your method to escape and then to beat him.

Characters & Development

Thor

In this issue we learned a great new fact about our hero Thor, and that is with returning to Asgard, the time limit on his remaining Thor without the hammer is lifted. I find myself wondering how this fact will be used in the future. This could be the greatest development of our hero in issues, as such its one that can not go unmentioned.

Loki

While I don’t call this character growth as much as reinforcing what we all ready know about Loki, I feel that this issue further established him as the Nemesis that they want him to be. A revenge seeking and evil mastermind.

It will be interesting to see how they continue to develop him and his relationship with Thor.

Comic Book Review Summery

While I have my Issues with this story, overall I feel this is a solid comic book and worth reading, More so if you like Thor.  I feel it is Artistically a good work, and offers us some possibly important developments for Thor’s powers going forward. This issue also offers us the first look at Thor in Asgard himself.
