On The Trail of The Amazing Spider-Man

Tales To Astonish 57

It seems in my last several classic comic book reviews, we have seen a lot of Hero Vs. Hero action.  from Spider-Man and the Hulk  to X-Men Vs Fantastic Four, and now Giant-Man and the Wasp face off against Spider-Man.  Every time, we see this kind of action, their are challenges  and concerns that must be addressed, even more so as a reviewer. Is it original? are both sides true to there characters? or do we just have some group of hero’s fighting another for the sake of sales and marketing?  The last few, I feel have been good, this one, I feel starts off weak; but I will get to that in my review below, first a short summary.

In this issue, Egghead tricks the ants into relaying a false message to giant-man.  one that states that Spider-Man is out to attack Giant-man! can our hero’s clear up this conflict before it’s too late? (more…)

Avengers #6
Masters Of Evil!

Avengers 6

Just from the first moment you look at the cover, you can get a good idea what to expect, the Avengers facing off against a team of super-villains; the Masters Of Evil.  Lead by an unknown and new menace ”Zemo”, leading a cast of antagonist that each of our hero’s has faced in a solo adventure.  we have  Radioactive Man,  The Black Knight, and The Melter back and together for the first time, to stop there former opponents new team.

But will this team of Super-villains stand a better chance united then they each did on there own? and what is Zemo’s motivation?  lets just say he is being put in via retroactive continuity, as a historic Captain America opponent. (more…)

Ant-Man:Season One

Ant-Man Season One

I was filled with excitement as I opened Ant-Man Season One for the first time.  Ironic considering that until I stared doing this site, he was not even in the list of my favorite hero’s  but his early stories and his character has seemed to grow on me; So much so that a modern In-Continuity retelling I thought would be just the kind of thing for me to love, and to bring new people into contact with the not so well-known hero.

Also so far, my feeling of the Season One stories has been  of how well they have been done.   But this one, is different; even as I sit down to do my comic book  review of it, it leaves me divided.  I did love the art and story, but I also feel it fell short of the goals of the season one titles. The Coming Of The Magician!

Tales To Astonish 56

In this issue, just as the cover promises, we see Giant-Man using his power to his advantage, and then just as the last tale foretold, we get the hint of a looming proposal from hank Pym to Janet van Dyne.   But will this story be as magical as we hope, or just a bunch of tricks?

Tales To Astonish #55
On The Trail Of The Human Top!

tales to Astonish 55

In tales To astonish #55 we have Hank Pym as both Giant-Man and Ant-man using his skills along with the assistance of Janet Van Dyne to stop the Human Top for the second time. The first time was in Tales To Astonish #50 and #51.  But what does their second encounter have in store for us?  and what of the words on the cover “How can the Human Top be beaten when he too can grow as big as Giant-man??” but then, the real question I have going in to read it, is this issue a Giant Tease or Giant Success. The Invasion of the Lava Men!

Avengers 5

Now has come the time for me to review Avengers #5,  where we have the first issue of avengers with Captain America as a full member, and  even after the epic battle with the hulk in Fantastic Four, we have  him returning for this tale,  titled  ”The Invasion Of The lava Men!”

That is right, for those who remember, this is a follow up of not only the recent avengers stories in Fantastic Four and Avengers #4 & #3, but also Journey Into Mystery #97.  And in this tale, we don’t have just one Lava man, but a whole army, and a weapon like none other, the living rock!

Tales To Astonish 53

Now as you may remember from my review of Tales To Astonish #48, I was not to trilled with the porcupine or his first appearance.  So now we will get to find out if his return sticks on me any better, or if this is another tale I would want to forget?

The Avengers Meet Sub-Mariner!

Avengers 3

For today’s comic book review I read Avengers #3,  In this issue we have Namor, the Sub-Mariner, in his first appearance scene Fantastic Four Annual #1.  But in this issue he does not face the Avengers alone, instead he acquires the assistance of the renegade and hunted Hulk to improve his chances of success against the surface world.

This issue also have an all-star cast, showing us almost every active hero In the marvel universe, even if only for a few short frames. We have the Fantastic Four, The X-men, and even Spider-Man making a showing in the first few pages, as the Avengers call out for help in locating the hulk. but to no surprise it is Rick Jones and the Teen Brigade that is the real help in locating him.  But Finding the Hulk is the easy part, and when he teams up with Namor, can even the Avengers stop them?

avengers 2

For today’s comic book review, I checked out Avengers #2, where they do battle against  The Space Phantom!  But who is this space phantom, and how can he alone threaten the avengers?

The space phantom has the power to become anyone he chooses, and in doing so, vanquish them to limbo, taking their place and powers among men.  Where he is from, we do not know, but his goal is to test himself against the avengers and pave the way for the conquest of Earth by his people.

Can the avengers defeat the space phantom? or can he defeat them by playing on their own fears and mistrust?  (more…)

Tales To Astonish #49
The Birth of Giant-Man

Tales To Astonish 49

For today’s comic book review I read the story in Tales To Astonish #49 titled “The Birth of Giant-Man”  and this story offers perhaps the greatest development and change for our ongoing Ant-man and the wasp stories so far, giving Dr. Hank Pym the choice to be ant-man or to double his size to 12 feet and become Giant-man.

But the story offers us more than just the new development by the brilliant scientist; Although I am happy to say that the development is given significant page space instead of just being seen in action.   You see, while Dr. Pym is working on this, a new menace known as the Eraser has shown up on the scene, and is on some kind of mission of erasing key scientist.   What seems like it might be some kind of communist plot, expect for the fact that the Eraser is clearly not human.  But what can  his goal be?  (more…)
