The Hordes of General Fang! is the Second of two hulk stories in Incredible Hulk #5, Beauty and the Beast has its own review Here.
If you already read my review of Beauty and the Beast then you know that so far Incredible Hulk #5 did not inspire me greatly. Fortunately the 2nd tale featuring our favorite green hero was better than the first.
It both tied in event’s from last issue, as well as had some character development, be it not a lot. The art did strike me as being a bit better this time around as well. So all in all, The Hordes of General Fang! was a better read.
The story made most of its merits in continuity and development, so i encourage you to read below. but as a stand alone story, it was enjoyable. it provided us with a great level of action, heroism, and even comedy. It is a story of a true hero, Dr. Bruce Banner becomes aware of a situation that the Hulk can help in, and like any hero, does what he must.
I feel this half of the issue was done much better than the last half, the world felt deeper and richer this time. There is something to be said for seeing the hulk dressed in a large coat, scarf and hat to cover himself up aboard an airplane too that just makes me happy.
but it’s not just that panel that made it look good, the whole thing, from the solders to the hulks expressions where just richer this time around .
Originality & Continuity
While going to another nation and smashing up communist is not original, or even limited to just comic stories. it is timely, and this issue I feel its done in the ways that only The Hulk could do.
As for continuity, one of the biggest smiles on my face was getting to see the Iceberg Missile that we seen last issue used on the real hulk! When I read about it, I wanted to see it being used, and I am glad that they followed though!
Characters & Development
This story poses to us a good development, one that is just hinted at, and could be used as foreshadowing, it is just one thing that was said, early in the story, and it left an impact, it made me realise that is one strong bit of character growth for Dr. Bruce Banner / The Hulk.
But there is one thing worrying me — one thing that I fear.. Each time I become the hulk, I grow more and more unwilling to return to my normal self! That’s why I Need you, lad — you must never let me remain the hulk– Not if you can help it!
That one bit.. those few words.. I feel told volumes about the direction this story could take. it greatly spoke more about the hulk and Dr. Bruce banner then anything. and it looms over all other developments and aspects of the story as the greatest thing in this story.
