February 10, 2012 | Drew | (No Comments)

For today’s comic book review, I checked out Avengers #2, where they do battle against  The Space Phantom!  But who is this space phantom, and how can he alone threaten the avengers?

The space phantom has the power to become anyone he chooses, and in doing so, vanquish them to limbo, taking their place and powers among men.  Where he is from, we do not know, but his goal is to test himself against the avengers and pave the way for the conquest of Earth by his people.

Can the avengers defeat the space phantom? or can he defeat them by playing on their own fears and mistrust?  (more…)

December 22, 2011 | Drew | (No Comments)

For today’s comic book review i am proud to bring the story titled “A Skrull Walks Among Us!” from Fantastic Four #18; this is the second appearance of the alien race the Skrull in marvel, and the first appearance of Super-Skrull.

To provide a short Summery of Fantastic Four #18, we have the story begin with our hero’s relaxing, but it turns out while there at rest, far far away the skrull empire is preparing.   Wanting to get rid of the Fantastic Four, after they foiled them in the second issue; their plan, to create a Super-Skrull, a solder with all the powers of the Fantastic Four, only greater. In this they succeed and send him to earth to start their conquest.

Tales To Astonish #46
...When Cyclops Walks The Earth

December 20, 2011 | Drew | (No Comments)

Today I set out to do a comic book review on the ant-man and the wasp story from Tales To Astonish #46.  From the starting point, the cover did not set me off with great hope for the issue, but I know that is a bad way to judge a book.

for a short synopsis of the story, we have ant-man and the wasp experiencing a slow  period in the crime-fighting business.  This leads them to take a vacation,  where they decide to go to Greece; once there they find out that the locals are afraid to sail out to the islands do to a monster that’s been seen and attacking.  having seen the cover it’s not a stretch to connect it to the cyclops.  but can Ant-man & The wasp get to the bottom of this mythological threat? Tales To Astonish #44
Ant-Man and the Wasp! Vs. The Creature From Kosmos!

December 3, 2011 | Drew | (No Comments)
tales to astonish #44

In sitting down to do my comic book review for the Ant-Man and Wasp story in Tales To Astonish #44, I realize the importance of this issue. These simple, and short facts must be stated first before I begin even thinking about being critical of the 18 page story.

This issue is the first appearance and the origin of the Wasp,  ant-man’s lovely partner, but is introduced to us first as Janet Van Dyne, the daughter of a brilliant scientist.

While I mention the wasp first, it is far from the first important element written into this issue, before we even meet the wasp, we get a good amount of depth built into the background of Dr. Henry Pym, an epic tale of love and death that will build upon the origin we already know.

Amazing Spider-Man #2
The Uncanny Threat Of The Terrible Tinkerer!

November 12, 2011 | Drew | (2 Comments)
Amazing Spider Man #2

The Second story in Amazing Spider-Man #2 is The Uncanny Threat Of The Terrible Tinkerer! Also check out our comic book review of the 1st story titled Duel To The Death With The Vulture!

In March of 1963, Spider-man got off to a good start with his own amazing title, and then two months later, the second issue was released, and Stan Lee and Steve Ditko used two stories to build onto their Amazing Spider-Man.

but after reading the incredible vulture story, what  is left for the comic greats to give us? well why don’t i use words directly from the story to get us started:

Everybody loves a bargain! But sometimes it can be dangerous to accept a bargain which is too good to be true! especially if the bargain is being offered by someone like the Tinkerer

Tales of suspense #40
Iron Man Versus Gargantus!

November 5, 2011 | Drew | (No Comments)
Tales of suspense 40

Even from the cover, our second iron man story seems to feature our hero, now gold-colored facing off what seems to be some ancient monster of a brute. But what the real question comes down too, is does this story build upon what we were given as an origin the month before?

Also what of Tony Stark, does Iron Man live a double life?  does he keep his identity secret? all kinds of question’s to be responded to that the origin story did not have a need to address. (more…)

Journey Into Mystery #90
Trapped By The Carbon-Copy Man!

November 3, 2011 | Drew | (No Comments)

With Journey Into Mystery #90 Thor is set to face the “Carbon Copy Man” whom is in actuality Lord Zano. Son of Lord Ugarth, alien leader of a race known as Xartans  from the Zugano star system.

Wow that’s a mouth full for the start of today’s comic book review. does this shape changing alien race with the goal of earthly conquest live up to some of the others? or are they like the toad-men, and not worth a moment of my time?

Amazing Adventures #4
What Lurks Within ?

October 28, 2011 | Drew | (No Comments)

With this week drawing to an end, and Halloween drawing closer, it may be time that the reviews started to show a bit more signs of the day that comes. This one does fit that requirement, and not just in the comic book title”What Lurks Within?

This comic book story starring the hero of the week Doctor Droom was printed in September 1961’s Amazing adventures issue.  of the comic book reviews I did this week, this is the one that was both the “brightest” and the most “Halloween” feeling.

was it the story, was it spooky, was it eerie and anything else that made it seem like Halloween to me?  Not so much, no.  But then, what was it? Indeed that is the first question I will strive to respond to, before I get down to the normal point of my comic book review.

Amazing Adventures #3
Doctor Droom meets Zemu!

October 27, 2011 | Drew | (No Comments)

Unlike yesterday I offer no great quotes or build up to them, the beginning of his the 3rd Doctor Droom Story offered me none that I felt would be right to start us off.

That is not to say that I do not feel it is a good story, even if I can’t help but feel I have seen this in a movie, although one that I believe is from the later 80’s (or is it early 90’s?).

I will waste no more time building up to the review of this comic book story though, and dive right in. (more…)

Incredible Hulk #6
Vs. The Metal Master!

October 22, 2011 | Drew | (No Comments)

As I sat down to read Incredible Hulk #6, the last comic book of the original Incredible Hulk run, I wondered what kind of story I would be in for. Would it be a story suitable for the end of a series, and perhaps a character? would I feel a scene of conclusion?  Did they even know at the time of writing and publishing that this would be the last issue?

I can’t say or speculate at what they did or didn’t know. But as an ending,  I was quite satisfied. So read on and see how my comic book review of Incredible Hulk #6 went. and pick up the last of the original Incredible hulk’s in reprint and read it for yourselves in Incredible Hulk, Vol. 1 (Marvel Masterworks).  The collected volume includes all six issues of the original incredible hulk run.

Strange Tales #103
Prisoner of the 5th Dimension

September 30, 2011 | Drew | (2 Comments)

Strange tales #103 where the human Torch is the prisoner of the 5th dimension, was a well written, and fairly well drawn story.  This time, the little care needed to explain why he is investigating this alone is taken.

just 1 panel, greatly helped this story fit in with a level of acceptability with the other Fantastic Four stories.  everything from there falls into place.

Journey Into Mystery #83
Thor the Mighty! and The Stone Men from Saturn

September 9, 2011 | Drew | (No Comments)

A big title for a short story,  the ‘Journey Into Mystery’ comics would feature a few stories in each, but all I have the luxury of reviewing is ‘Thor the Mighty! and “The Stone Men from Saturn”‘. This 13 page short is the first appearance of The Mighty Thor, and serves at the origin story for how Dr. Don Blake  by chance, luck of fate becomes him.

In fact, from issue #83 on, the title ‘Journey Into Mystery’ Would feature Thor, and grow into being a comic about our favorite Norse god. But these 13 pages is where it all begin’s for him. In them we see a wonderful showcase of Dr. Blake learning what powers he possesses as Thor as well as saving the earth from an invasion of Stone Men whom come from Saturn of all places.

Incredible Hulk #2
the Terror of the Toad Men!

September 7, 2011 | Drew | (No Comments)

What can I say, how should I start this one-off.   I went into reading Issue #2 having come from Incredible Hulk #1 with high hopes. Having highly liked everything about the first volume, how could I expect anything less than greatness?

Perhaps I am being hard or requesting too much out of the older books, Both Jack & Stan were worked hard, and in my opinion, not compensated near enough for what they did do. That being said. The Incredible Hulk #2 left me with taste of disappointment.  (more…)

Fantastic Four #2
Skrulls From Outer Space

August 31, 2011 | Drew | (2 Comments)
Fantastic Four #2

For the Fantastic Four, what comes after stopping an invasion from below? Stopping one from above of course.  Last Issue, the Fantastic Four Come onto the scene out of nowhere to save the Earth from the Mole Man, This time, it’s the Skrulls that is the threat.

Also in the time between the last issue and this, while not directly mentioned. it seems the Fantastic Four went public with whom they are. Perhaps due to causing so much havoc and confusion in their own rights before saving the day from an unknown threat?  But I find this, undiscussed coming out of the  Hero closet is key to the story. Read it, and you will see. (more…)
