Amazing Spider-Man #24:Spider-Man Goes Mad!

In this issue, we dive into the classic Spider-Man drama we all know and love. The main plot revolves around J. Jonah Jameson’s latest scheme to discredit Spider-Man by publishing testimonials from the public about why they hate our web-slinging hero.

While Jonah’s plan is brewing, we also follow Spider-Man’s struggles as he tries (and fails) to make money by taking crime-fighting photos. Meanwhile, Flash Thompson wrestles with feelings of jealousy over his girlfriend, Liz Allen, who seems to spend more time with Peter Parker than with him.

The drama really kicks off when Dr. Ludwig Rinehart bursts onto the scene. This mysterious doctor collaborates with Jonah to push the idea that Spider-Man is teetering on the edge of insanity. Prophecy seems to become reality as Spider-Man begins seeing past villains from his rogues’ gallery appearing everywhere—only for them to vanish right before a fight can begin. Convinced he might truly be losing his grip on reality, Spidey seeks out the doctor to figure out if he’s going mad.

While all this is happening, Jonah stumbles upon a startling truth about Dr. Rinehart and confronts him at his home. Coincidentally, Flash Thompson—one of Spider-Man’s biggest fans—spots Jonah heading into the house. Flash, in full fanboy mode, chases after Jonah while shouting about his editorials smearing Spider-Man. It’s in this penultimate moment that the truth about Dr. Rinehart is revealed…

Story

As far as mystery stories go, this issue weaves a web (pun intended) that is an enjoyable read from the first page to the last. The twist about Dr. Ludwig Rinehart’s true identity is both surprising and satisfying, keeping readers hooked throughout.

The issue also does a fantastic job fleshing out the supporting cast. We see Flash Thompson’s conflicting feelings about Spider-Man and Peter Parker, Liz Allen’s lingering crush on Peter despite dating Flash, and the ongoing drama of Betty Brant’s pen-pal relationship with Ned Leeds. Aunt May even gets a tender moment as she wishes Peter would confide in her—a poignant nod to her unawareness of his secret identity.

Artwork

The artwork in this issue masterfully conveys the mystery and Spider-Man’s possible descent into madness. Subtle hints are sprinkled throughout, rewarding readers who pay close attention (or reread) with clues about how the whole caper was pulled off. Truly, it’s a Marvel Masterwork that makes every page a treat.

One particularly memorable panel features Dr. Rinehart in his office, seemingly upside-down. The doctor’s dialogue bubbles are also printed upside-down, requiring readers to flip the comic to read it from his perspective. It’s a creative and immersive choice that elevates the scene.

Character and Development

This issue truly shines in its focus on the supporting cast, even as Spider-Man grapples with his own fears and self-doubt. Flash, Liz, and Betty all have moments that add depth to their characters, while Peter’s dual identity takes center stage.

Spider-Man’s growing fear of hurting the people he loves underscores the heavy cost of his double life. This theme—that his secret identity is meant to protect those closest to him—feels central to the issue. Unlike heroes like the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man’s anonymity is vital, even though it often comes at great personal expense to Peter Parker’s relationships and happiness.
