Journey Into Mystery #118:To Kill a Thunder God!

In this issue, Loki devises a new plan following Thor’s prior victory in Vietnam, aiming to prevent him from returning to Asgard with the mystical stones. This scheme revolves around activating the Destroyer, an ancient weapon created by Odin to protect Earth. Once activated by the human who finds it, the Destroyer becomes an unstoppable force capable of annihilating any target it encounters.

As the battle unfolds, it becomes clear that Thor is outmatched—the Destroyer is on the verge of killing him. Even Loki begins to grasp that his plan has spiraled out of control. Fearing Odin’s wrath should Thor perish, Loki desperately seeks Odin’s intervention, knowing he is the only being capable of stopping the Destroyer. Unfortunately, Odin is in the middle of his required annual day of sleep. When Loki attempts to wake him, his cries for help are ignored, and he is locked away, leaving Thor to face the Destroyer alone.

Characters & Development

Loki shines as the master planner and schemer, but his attempt to abort his own plan raises an interesting question: is he motivated solely by fear of Odin’s punishment, or is there a hint of genuine concern for Thor? At this stage, the writing leans toward self-preservation rather than heart, but it leaves room for readers to speculate.

Once again, we see Loki’s plans come tantalizingly close to success. Yet, as always, he falls short. This recurring theme continues to develop his character, leaving us eagerly anticipating his next move in future issues.

Originality & Continuity

Although part of an ongoing storyline, this issue could easily serve as someone’s introduction to the series. While familiarity with previous issues or Thor’s broader arc adds depth, the action-packed battle and the central conflict are engaging enough for a first-time reader to enjoy. It strikes a sweet spot for continuity.

Interestingly, this version of the Destroyer bears some resemblance to a character we’ll encounter in the soon-to-be-reviewed X-Men #12: the Juggernaut. While the two have distinct abilities, their origins share striking similarities—something particularly notable given the close release dates of these stories. It’s fascinating to see how these early Marvel tales occasionally overlap in concept while carving out unique paths for their characters.

Story & Art

From the unnamed hunter who stumbles upon the Destroyer to Loki’s evolving motives and eventual desperation to undo his scheme, this issue keeps the tension steadily building. The climactic ending leaves us on the edge of our seats, eagerly anticipating the next chapter.

As always, the legendary duo of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee deliver a visual and narrative spectacle. Their collaboration brings this tale to life in a way that doesn’t disappoint. The pacing, stakes, and artistry come together beautifully, making this issue another standout in the series.
