After the previous issue felt like a way to drag out the conflict between our protagonist and his notorious nemesis, this installment finally delivers some momentum to the story. Doctor Strange, in an effort to return home and uncover who Baron Mordo might be working with, must first get past one of Mordo’s agents. Alas, after dispatching the agent and attempting to use his All-Seeing Eye, Strange unintentionally alerts Mordo to his presence. Armed with a power boost from Dormammu, Mordo engages Doctor Strange in an epic battle. In the climactic final pages, we watch in awe as Mordo defeats Strange, sending him off to… well, we don’t know where just yet.

Story

The real strength of this story lies in the brief appearances of the supporting cast and what they contribute to the growing narrative. First, we have the Ancient One, who cryptically calls out the word (or name) “Eternity” in the context of aiding his loyal disciple, Doctor Strange. Then, we revisit the yet-unnamed “Girl of the Dark Dimension” from issues #126 and #127, along with her father. In their short scene, they discuss Dormammu’s motionless state, with the girl ominously recalling the last time she felt such a terrible premonition—when Doctor Strange was in danger.

Both threads serve as tantalizing hints of things to come, while also expanding the cast and enriching the ongoing narrative. These additions not only build intrigue for this arc but also elevate the significance of prior stories, making everything feel more interconnected and impactful.

Artwork

Steve Ditko’s work in this issue is downright breathtaking. The pages are packed with intricate details and magical realism, as Ditko continues to define what magic looks like in the Marvel Universe. Once again, we see cracks form in Strange’s protective shields, adding tension and drama to the mystic battles.

Ditko’s attention to detail shines in the clothing and the flowing movement of Strange’s iconic cape. The use of color and shading enhances the comic’s mystical atmosphere, immersing readers further into the strange and surreal world of Doctor Strange.

The Ongoing Narrative

This arc’s narrative grows stronger with each passing issue, leaving us breathless as we await what must come next: Doctor Strange dealing with his mysterious banishment. At the same time, we’re left pondering what role the supporting cast will play and eagerly anticipating more revelations about the enigmatic Eternity.
