Tales Of Suspense #51:The Sinister Scarecrow

For today’s comic book review I read The Iron Man story published in Tales Of Suspense #51, titled “The Sinister Scarecrow“. In this issue, we have the origin of a new, and strange menace known as the Scarecrow, whose life of crime leads him right into the path of Iron Man as he robs tony stark’s house. But can iron man defeat an opponent whom may just be the strangest he has ever encountered?

Story

This story just seemed to flow from one panel to the next, in its ongoing and well constructed story.  Offering us  several glimpses into the life of Tony Stark, all while giving us all the Iron Man adventure we could hope for.

Artwork

Where this story had a good story, it really excelled at the artwork,  and Don Heck impressed me more than he has so far.  Several panels felt real, and life-like, drawing me into the scene and the action, while others offered interesting yet insightful perspectives.  My eyes never had a dull moment in this issue.

The Panel I included, shows Iron Man, up close and personal, making his threats against the scarecrow.  This is but one of many panels that just made me go ‘wow’.

Originality and Continuity

this comic book offers a menace that does seem at least slightly original, even if his goals are ones we have seen a few times now.  But the ongoing Continuity, I feel worked well.  Even offering the hint that someday Pepper Potts may just go for Happy.

Characters and Development

I started to say it, just above, about Pepper and Happy, but that’s not all. In fact I feel that Iron Man’s two supporting characters got a bit more depth in this issue then they have thus far.  For example when Pepper sends away Tony’s date;  and justifies it to herself.  Giving her very human qualities.

you really have to wonder why the scarecrow debuts as an Iron man villain. Its a good story but he seems a better fit for daredevil. theres really nothing the scarecrow can do to hurt IM. A strange choice one issue after the Uber-powerful mandarin.

The Matchup does not seem to be a well balanced one, and that could be a big part of why they found so much room to let us see into Tony Stark’s life in this issue.

Having the weaker Scarecrow after the Mandarin does not surprise me too much though. I recall seeing this a few times now where after a Top grade opponent, we get a issue or more of lesser threats.

I would have preferred to see Scarecrow in Daredevel #2, your right it would have been a good pairing.
