Today’s comic book review is of Tales To Astonish #42, in this issue we learn of Jason Cragg. whom gains the “Voice of Truth” a power that makes people believe what ever he says. but his hypnotic power enough to make me give him a good review? More importantly how does Ant-Man deal with a threat who’s very words can make everyone turn against him.
So, internet readers out there, hear my words, Read my comic book review to find out if Tales To Astonish #41 is worth reading? or does this ant-man story not measure up?
Comic review of the story
Synopsis
I covered much of this above, In this story we have Jason Cragg a Radio announcer whom though a twist of fate and a bit of escaped radiation gains the power to make anyone believe whatever he says is the truth.
The story follows Jason as he goes down the path of corruption, and his activities escalate until he decides he must get rid of Ant-Man. But how can ant-man stop a man whose voice is all-powerful?
Story Review
This story is better than the last one. Perhaps I enjoy stories of watching people being corrupted? or how power affects people. Jason Cragg is one whose power corrupts him. That seems to be what separates our supervillain’s from our Superheros. how our power affects us, via Obligation or corruption.
Comic review of the Art
Don Heck I feel does a good job with ant-man, in fact it is one of the few things i reviewed favorably of last issue. This issue was much brighter than the last though. but there was good use of shadows and angles. but there is one thing that I feel this issue did quite well and its important for Ant-Man stories:
The Scale of Ant-Man
Ant-man, is a hero that is tiny. the size of an ant. sometimes I feel that this is shown better than others. but in this issue there where several panels that I felt showed this well. Including one where Ant-Man is in the hand of Jason Cragg, just after being captured.
But as you read the issue you will see more, where his tiny stature is shown off compared to that of the full size world
Originality & Continuity
Hypnosis, Mind control and the like have been a recurring theme in comic books and stories for ages. I may even have to consider giving it, its own tag on the site. That will make it easier to find stories where it has been used or been a theme. but here are a couple that come to mind already
But I do feel this story is at least slightly unique enough to stand on its own. it is not a copy of at least anything that I have reviewed so far. Although I am sure that I have read, seen other stories that where similar to this in both power and method. at this moment I am drawing a blank.
Characters & Development
The world and ant-man’s growth seem to be at a standstill in this issue, I seen nothing worth considering as part of the growth of the character. however the same is not true for Ant-Man’s Ants.
Ant-Man’s Ants
Ant-Man’s ants are the only real characters to seem to grow in this story, and in that it is mostly just restating what we have already seen, that even without direct action by ant-man his ant’s have built up a loyalty to him.
