Tales To Astonish #54:No Place To Hide

This comic book review is for the Giant-man & Wasp story featured in Tales To Astonish #54, titled “No Place To Hide”. This tale features our hero’s after they are asked by the US Government to investigate a governmental change in the small nation of Santo Rico, and its new leader “El Toro!”

But is “no Place To Hide” worth the read?  does El Toro prove to be a worthy threat? and what is meant by the title, “No Place to Hide!”. these are all good questions as you begin to read my review, or flip though the story yourself.

Artwork

I do feel that Don HEck did a great job drawing this issue,  giving good depth to both our characters, and the world.  from the opening scene inside Dr. Pym’s lab, to  Santo Rico, Don Heck aways had enough detail, without going overboard.

he also used a creative use of angles in many panels to give us a different perspective, I feel this has worked well.

Characters & Development

Does Janet Van Dyne and Hank Pym seem out of character to you? Me too!

In this issue, the characters seem  a bit off, perhaps even more then a bit.  Hank Pym seems to be more interested in Janet then he has ever been up until now.

Then Janet is playing hard to get, in order to get her way? ok that may not be that different, but for one who has been trying to catch Dr. Pym’s eye for so long to turn down a kiss?

There have been a few hints lately of romance between the two hero’s, but nothing that stands so strongly in the face of their characters or the continuity as I feel this issue did.

Originality & Continuity

This tale seems quite familiar to me. the tales from Journey Into Mystery #84  and  Fantastic Four #21 come to mind quite quickly, then the government calling upon giant-man directly also feels a bit off; not meshing well with the continuity as I see it.

Story

Taking all this into account, the story was funny and mildly entertaining at best, but far from a great read; one that i had hoped, and expected better for.  but I would love to hear what you all think, about this story, or even the art of this tale?  I for one think it easily could be skipped and forgotten.
