Dr. Reed Richards is a brilliant inventor and founding member of the Fantastic Four. In the original origin, Reed lead the founding members of the Fantastic Four into space (to beat the communist there) sneaking past the military’s personal. One thing that has remained true to their origin over time is that Reed with the rest of the team was bombarded with cosmic rays and upon crashing back to earth Transformed. Reed Richards, or Mr. Fantastic as he would come to be called after that fateful day developed elastic – stretching- powers.
In the early days after the change Reed would spend a great amount of his mental resources on trying and failing to find a cure for The Thing, the lone teammate made unable to have a normal life by the powers he gained. He is driven by a feeling of responsibility and guilt for what happened to the team. However his work for Ben, did not stop him from advancing the Fantastic Four though the development of many of the teams tools including the Fantasti-Car.
In these early issues Reed Richards is engaged to Sue Storm (the Invisible Girl at that point) although that dynamic will at times play out with a love triangle between the two of them and Namor.
In early continuity, Reed Richards had served during World War II along with Ben Grim, a fact seen in Sgt. Fury #3 as well as in other flashbacks.
It is also reveled that in Reed’s past he attended college with both Ben Grimm (his roommate) and the brilliant Dr. Doom whom becomes one of the primary adversaries of the Fantastic Four.
